Magical Land

Magical Land
Fall 2006

I was commissioned by the Black Sheep Puppet Festival to build this installation for The Brew House Space 101 Gallery. I had two weeks to transform this massive empty white room into an interactive magical land. For the first chunk of days I didn’t sleep much and built the armatures for all the puppets and then hosted a series of community work days where folks of all ages came and helped me paper mache the skin over all the forms I had built. They cut tons of paper leaves for the cardboard trees and raked up a bunch of real ones to spread on the ground. Then I lead a quick workshop where a dozen musicians and performers and I came up with a performative guided tour of sorts which we shared with a big crowd on the night the show opened. The installation was up for the 3 days of the festival (and served as the entrance way through which everybody passed to get into the theater.) Then we took it down, drove it to Philly and re-installed it for a one-night-only showing at the East African Culture Center, and had a giant party to the tunes of the West Philadelphia Orchestra.
